William Farnum Estate medal,Sons of Union Veterans 1883 Maj AP Davis Pitts PA

Today there are going to be offerings from the William Farnum estate.  The noted actor of stage and film acquired and earned a collection of pins badges and medals for himself and from his family members over the years.   While there are images of all the pieces, you will only be bidding/purchasing the identified piece in each listing.   This is a SONS OF UNION VETERANS medal of 1883 designed by  Major A P Davis Pitts. PA.(as is engraved on the back of the top bar).    It measures approximately 3" x 1.5".  The clasp is original and in good working condition.   The red white and blue ribbon shows some wear and discoloration.   There is little information on who received this medal or by whom it was given.  It is unique in that in addition to the SV on the bottom branch there are the letters, A, L, S, on the other four branches of the medal between the cannon.   RECEIVED INFORMATION:
This is an Auxiliary Badge to the SUVCW. Hence belonging to a woman. It is also not from 1883 -that is the year the organization was chartered and this is not a presentation badge from DAVIS. He was a designer of the badge.

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War

SUVCW
) is an American Congressionally chartered
fraternal organization that carries out educational, patriotic and philanthropic activities to preserve the history and legacy of the United States Armed Forces veterans who fought and worked to save the United States during the Civil War.
It is the legal successor to the GAR,
the large and influential grouping of Union Army
veterans that existed in the decades following the Civil War. Most SUVCW activities occur at the "Camp", or local community, level. In turn, Camps are grouped into state and/or regional structures called "Departments". The National organization, with headquarters at the National Civil War Museum
in Harrisburg, PA,
meets annually in a National Encampment that is attended by SUVCW members, known as "Brothers", from all Camps and Departments.
