Large, RARE Fossil CONCH Shell

from Florida
This fossil CONCH shell is from from the Pliocene period, part of the Caloosahatchee Formation.   It was collected at the bottom of the Newburn APAC Pit, Sarasota, Fl.   It is now closed to the general public like most fossil shell pits in Florida.
Although a broken shell
, it broke in such a way that you have an
unusual view of the inner columella
and body whorls.  You get the exact specimen shown in the photos above.  The conch shell,
Strombus leidyi
is 14.7 cm long.
